collected and donated clothing, toiletries, food, and money to the community center. also stayed and served lunch to the homeless and talked with them after about various health related topics. love this center! thanks to Shronda Green for taking me there with the other nursing students and letting me know that other's in my community do care and want to help.
although it was the first time for the nursing students to participate in this event, and the turn out was not what we had expected, we did learn a lot about the "rennie" culture and what services and information they will need from us in the future. we built a positive relationship with them, and hope to have many service learning projects with them again in the future.
loved helping at the hospitality center doing BP's, playing games, serving lunch, and congregating with the members. i love that ther is a program like this in my community.
Readers are Leaders is a great annual service activity intended to connect working professionals with K-12 students. I tell them about what I do, who I am, and why I enjoy reading to them, and then I read 2 Dr. Seuss books. My favorite book to read out loud is Fox In Socks because it's full of tongue twisters and can be really engaging for the students listening. I felt like this group of students really engaged with me this year. I felt like they really valued my time and were excited to hear the stories I read. In previous years, this hasn't always been so. I will do this again next year (and the next and next and next).
